A Low-Cost IoT Based System for Environmental Monitoring.

Published In: Conference: 2019 International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT)

Abstract:

This paper presents a low cost and reliable IoT based system for remote sensing of environmental conditions such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, dust particulates, rain, temperature and humidity. The proposed system is important in georeferenced collection, processing and analysis of traffic related pollution information around roads and its effect on the quality of life in Smart Cities. A complete solution, from physical level consisting of sensors, communication system, data management and storage on a cloud platform has been presented. For cost reduction, off the self-sensors and computation system are used with special emphasis on devising strategies for reliability and ease of use. Open source and free cloud computing platform has been employed because of its ability in receiving, management and data analytical capabilities on huge amounts of data at no cost. The resultant system provides the capability for logging, visualizing and analyzing traffic generated environmental pollutants across entire city. The proposed system was evaluated for four consecutive days to check the correctness of our system.
